The Hull Identification Variety (HIN) is a 12- or 14-character serial variety that uniquely identifies a ship. The HIN is analogous to the VIN on an automobile.

The primary three digits are the Manufacturer’s Identification Code (ex. Boat brand name for example Sea Ray, Meridian, and many others.).
